Ashunta Sheriff on Makeup and Motivation

I love a woman that’s killing it in the industry. And Ashunta Sheriff is definitely killing it. A seasoned makeup artist and beauty entrepreneur, Ashunta is responsible for glamming up Cookie Lyon Taraji P. Henson on Fox’s Empire and on the red carpet.

What I dig most about Ashunta is how inspiring she is. Her Instagram is full of personal testimonies and encouraging words. One of my favorites from her page reads:

“I work ALOT!! Sleep doesn’t exist at times. I’ve been in this game of entertainment creating beautiful faces one amazing woman and powerful man at a time for almost 20 years. It has its highs and its lows but my advice to aspiring artist… is to remember to stay grounded in the purpose of why you chose this profession. If it’s only for the money or the #newschoolfame from social media then maybe you should rethink this job. It’s deeper than that and those who have been working in this industry along with me and before me know what I’m talking about. The Money is not always amazing. It’s not always glamorous but I love what I do I would not change a thing”.

It’s a no brainer why she’s sitting pretty on success. I was very fortunate in getting some time with her to talk all thing beauty! Check out the interview below…

How did you start as a makeup artist?
I started in high school. When we did plays, I always designed the makeup and clothing ideas with a group of other young women. We did a lot of amazing productions with fun elaborate makeup. That’s where I first fell in love with makeup.

What’s the best skincare advice you ever received?
Always get a facial once a month. Sleep in serums or healthy oils like coconut oil if you’re not too oily. This is a natural treatment that rebuilds collagen and helps with skin’s elasticity. Drink 2-3 liters of water daily, and have a daily green juice it does wonders for the skin.

If you could have two perfumes to wear for the rest of your life what would they be?
I love Dior Miss Cherie and Atkinson Rose [In Wonderland] mixed with IF. I wear that with everything.

You are very versatile with your hair, what’s your favorite style to wear?
I love Senegalese twist, but I love a bone straight weave too. I love wearing my natural short cut as well. I guess I love them all because my hair goes with my mood.

 What’s your favorite nail salon?
Pampered Hands on Melrose [Ave.] in Los Angeles is my fav. Kat does my nails and she is amazing with design, nail care and with shaping.

What are the must have products that you use on yourself and clients?
Perfect Blend Dual Foundation Stick, Dior CC Primer Spray, Damone Roberts Brow Pencil, Papaw Ointment, Biore Charcoal Cleanser and Blotters, Jeffree Star Redrum Velour Liquid Lipstick, Ardell lashes, Duo lash adhesive, Jergens Shea Butter lotion, Cover Girl Queen Collection Bronzer in brown bronze, Pur Minerals Eye Polish, Dior Exstase black mascara, Mac Chestnut lip liner, Black Opal Foundation Sticks and Gleam by Melanie Mills, Colourpop lip colors are all amazing and of course Model in a Bottle is my favorite setting spray!

Have you ever doubted yourself or your career path?
I have, of course, doubted myself at times and insecure about my talent, comparing myself to others. However, with a lot of meditation and focus in prayer, I began to channel my energy differently and focus on the fact that I am me and my talent, personality and the very essence of who I am makes me special. Not more special than someone else, but special in terms of me as an individual. That has given me the greatest peace and helps me to stay in my own lane and create my own path with regards to my career.

How do you keep yourself motivated?
My kids and my mom keep me motivated, and the most important thing that keeps me motivated is God. When you know that your talent comes from something greater than you then you always have something to keep you motivated.
